Following on from the discussion to camp in a free place and meet up as a group and avoid “admission fees” that are continuing to escalate in price, below is a New Year’s Eve camping idea.
The dates would be Saturday and Sunday nights on 12/30 and 12/31. This would also be a full pack in pack out event. Mark T. usually camps here and can weigh in on things to bring and do’s and don’ts.
Elmwood Recreation Area
This recreation area is in the northeastern
portion of the Francis Marion National Forest. It’s
a popular camp during deer and turkey hunts on the
Waterhorn Hunt Unit. The area also serves as a South
Carolina Deprtment of Natural Resources game-check
station during big-game hunting season.
Directions: From Charleston, take US Highway 17
north past McClellanville to Rutledge Road (SC Route
857-S). Turn left onto Rutledge Road and drive four
miles to Elmwood Recreation Area.
Facilities: Spigot water, vault toilets
Season: Year round
